The NHTSA launched an investigation into the 2004 and 2005 Freestar and Monterey over numerous complaints about the 4F50N transmission, centered on the failure of the torque converter spline shaft. Ford later recalled the 2004 and 2005 Freestars and Montereys to replace the torque converter free of charge. In 2009 the 2005 Freestar scored second in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, behind the Dodge Caravan.
