The third generation Windstar was released for the 2004 model year as the Ford Freestar, with updated exterior styling in line with Ford sedans and SUVs, a new interior sharing its design with the Five Hundred and a third row seat that stowed into the floor. The Freestar was the first Ford minivan produced solely with dual sliding doors, and Mercury replaced the Villager with the Ford produced Monterey. The 3.0 and 3.8 liter V6 engines were retired for two new engines.
