The first generation Tempo was released for sale on 26 May 1983 as a 1984 model, replacing the Fairmont as Ford's fourth line of compact cars and its first compact with front wheel drive. It was nearly 17 inches shorter than the Fairmont, used the Escort's chassis stretched by 5.7 inches, and had an aerodynamic body tested for over 450 hours in a wind tunnel. Ford unveiled it with the Mercury Topaz aboard the USS Intrepid. Each model year has its own page.
