For 1987 an all wheel drive option was introduced for both the two door and four door versions of the Tempo and its Mercury Topaz twin. It was a stand alone trim line equipped as an equivalent to the Tempo LX, with the more powerful engine of the GL Sport, fitted only with an automatic transmission, and driver activated by a pushbutton. The Topaz XR5, a sport coupe, was also offered for 1987 only, and the Sport GL ended.
