For the 1986 model year the Tempo and Topaz underwent a mid cycle exterior update, largely to bring them closer in design to the 1986 Taurus, with composite style headlamps, full width taillamps and a restyled bottom breather grille. The LX trim replaced the GLX. In 1986 the Tempo surpassed the Hyundai Pony to become the best selling new car in Canada. The sedan also adopted the sideview mirrors of the coupe, and the bumpers were redesigned to be further integrated with the body.
