The GT40 was one family of mid engined cars that Ford built to beat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which Ferrari had won six years running. It began in Britain as the Mk I, based on the Lola Mk6, and moved to Dearborn in 1964, with the 7 liter Mk II and Mk IV prototypes following. Because the rules asked for GT cars to be built in dozens and sold, around 100 were made, mostly 289 cubic inch Mk Is. Each season has its own page.
