The J-car, a GT40 prototype with an aluminium honeycomb chassis, killed Ken Miles at Riverside in 1966, and the team then redesigned the car completely as the Mk IV, with a Mk II engine and a different chassis and body. The Mk IV won the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, the only all American victory in Le Mans history, driven by Dan Gurney and A. J. Foyt for Shelby American. The high speeds caused a rule change that limited prototypes to 3 liters from 1968.
