After the rule change of late 1967 limited prototypes to 3.0 liter engines, the existing GT40 Mk I, with its 5.0 liter maximum if at least 50 had been built, was allowed to compete for overall wins. John Wyer's team revised the 4.7 liter engine to 4.9 liters with O-rings to stop head gasket failures, and the JWA Mk I won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968, which gave Ford the International Championship for Makes.
