The first generation was introduced in South Africa in 1983 on the Mark III Escort, to compete with the Nissan 1400 bakkie that dominated the market, with CVH petrol engines later replaced by crossflow ones. It was built at the Ford plant in Port Elizabeth and then at Samcor in Pretoria, and sold as the Mazda Rustler too. Its model years run from 1983 to 1989. The Bantam was a coupe utility pickup that Ford produced in South Africa for the South African market.
