In 1986, like the Escort on which it was based, the Bantam had 1,296 cc and 1,598 cc carburettor fed versions of the compound valve angle hemi engine. Criticism of noise, vibration and fuel consumption led Ford South Africa to drop the CVH engine and fit the crossflow engines used in other Escorts. The Bantam was a coupe utility pickup that Ford produced in South Africa for the South African market. It was the small half ton pickup known there as a bakkie, sold beside the Mazda Rustler.
