The Bantam of 1984 was meant to win market share that was then almost entirely held by Nissan's 1400 bakkie, which had been derived from a sedan, with the rest held by the recently released Volkswagen Caddy. It was a half ton pickup that could carry loads and passengers. The Bantam was a coupe utility pickup that Ford produced in South Africa for the South African market. It was the small half ton pickup known there as a bakkie, sold beside the Mazda Rustler.
