The R body New Yorker of 1979 to 1981 was shorter and much lighter than the C body car but kept a big car look and ride, with a 318 cubic inch V8 standard, hidden headlamps and full width taillights that set it apart from its Newport, St. Regis and Gran Fury siblings. A Fifth Avenue trim package was added in 1979. The early 1980s recession hit sales of large expensive cars hard. Its model years run from 1979 to 1981.
