In 1980 the New Yorker gained an upscale Special Edition trim package, with a brushed stainless steel roof treatment and exclusive mahogany metallic paint, more modest than the top level Fifth Avenue appearance and equipment option package, and six two tone color combinations were added to the options list. Sales were just over 13,500 cars as the price increased to 10,459 dollars, because the early 1980s recession had begun to affect large expensive cars.
