Buick presented the 1979 model year front wheel drive Riviera, its first front drive production model, built on a 114 inch wheelbase and once again sharing its mechanical design and platform with the Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Toronado. The Riviera became Motor Trend's Car of the Year. Sales more than doubled to 52,181 for 1979. Its model years run from 1979 to 1985. The first convertible Riviera came in 1982 and a special XX edition in 1983.
