A downsized Regal appeared for the 1978 model year with Buick's new 196 cubic inch V6 as standard equipment and a revised version of the venerable 231 cubic inch V6 as an option, which became standard for 1980. The first turbocharged Regal was introduced in 1978 as the Regal Sport Coupe, and the Grand National and GNX followed. The 1987 model ended manufacture of the rear drive G body Regal. Its model years run from 1978 to 1987.
