The M1 was BMW's first mid engined sports car and the first model built by its Motorsport division, a homologation special for racing. Giorgetto Giugiaro drew its fibreglass body, Gianpaolo Dallara engineered the chassis and a 3.5 liter straight six drove the rear wheels. It was built by hand from 1978 to 1981, after a partnership with Lamborghini collapsed, and it inspired the i8 of 2014. This site gives every generation and every model year its own page, in one generation: the single generation (1978 to 1981).
