The M1 went on sale to the public in 1978, after BMW reassumed control of the project from Lamborghini in April 1978 once seven prototypes had been built. Giorgetto Giugiaro had drawn the fibreglass body, taking inspiration from the 1972 BMW Turbo concept car, and Gianpaolo Dallara had made the tubular steel space frame. It was built by hand under the motorsport division of BMW. It was the first BMW with the M badge on a road car, a coupe built to qualify a racing car.
