The Champ began as a 1947 project for a four wheel drive 5 hundredweight car in the FV1800 series, for which Nuffield built three prototypes known as the Gutty and Wolseley about thirty of the improved Mudlark. Austin won the contract for 15,000 vehicles and fitted out a former aircraft factory at Cofton Hackett beside Longbridge for the work. Early cars had Rolls-Royce engines and later ones a near identical Austin copy. Its model years run from 1951 to 1956.
