1951 Austin Champ

Automobiles

The first production Champ was completed on 1 September 1951. Austin had been awarded the contract to produce 15,000 of them, and a former aircraft factory at Cofton Hackett on the edge of its Longbridge plant in Birmingham was fitted out to build them. The Champ was priced at 1,200 pounds in 1951, which proved too much: it was too expensive and too complex to compete with the Land Rover, which cost half as much.
