The A40 Farina is the small, economy car that Austin introduced in saloon form in 1958 and as the A40 Countryman estate in 1959, with a two box body designed by the Italian Battista Farina's Pinin Farina studio in Turin. It was intended to replace the A35 and inherited much of its running gear. Austin had been merged into BMC in 1952, but unusually for BMC at the time the A40 Farina was sold only as an Austin. The Countryman is viewed as one of the earliest volume production hatchbacks. This site gives every generation and every model year its own page, in 2 generations: the Mark I (1958 to 1961); the Mark II (1961 to 1967).
