In early summer 1960 a flat lid was added over the spare wheel in the rear luggage compartment of the A40 Farina. The A40 Farina of 1960 was a small economy car sold only as an Austin, unusually for BMC at the time, and not rebadged for sale under any other BMC brand, offered as the saloon and the Countryman estate with the tailgate that opened upward. The Countryman was one of the earliest hatchbacks.
