Although the CX-9 was discontinued in the United States after 2023, it continued to be produced and sold in other markets such as the Middle East, and production finally ended in 2024, with the Mazda CX-90 serving as its successor. It closed a run of two generations that began with the first CX-9 at the New York show in 2006, built in Hiroshima throughout. The second generation was built on the Skyactiv platform shared with the Mazdas introduced after 2011.
