From 2022 Toyota Gazoo Racing organized an 86 and BRZ spec championship across Japan, the Toyota Gazoo Racing GR86/BRZ Cup, and the competition allows mixed use of 2012 to 2020 86 models and the new 2022 and later models with the 2.4 liter engine, using a handicap system. The second generation BRZ had gone on sale in the United States in late 2021. Subaru chose a naturally aspirated engine to meet the goal of developing the ultimate pure sports car.
