For the 2022 model year the low volume L trim was discontinued, as it was on all other Chevrolet vehicles that previously offered the L trim, which made the LS trim the base model. The mechanical parking brake was also discontinued and replaced by an electronically operated parking brake on all models. The Malibu was then in its seventh model year of the ninth generation. The LS thereby became the entry level Malibu.
