Production of the Freelander 2 ended on 7 October 2014 at Halewood, and with it the Freelander line was approaching the end of its 17-year life. The five-door generation was replaced by the Discovery Sport, which was introduced in late 2014. The Freelander had been built since 1997 in two generations, the second with a 2.2-litre diesel in eD4, TD4 and SD4 versions and a Volvo six-cylinder petrol engine in some markets.
