In spite of strong protests from Sambar fans, Subaru ended production of kei vehicles at the end of fiscal year 2011, with the final day of production on 29 February 2012. The Sambar of 2011 was in its thirteenth and last year of the sixth generation, the last kei class vehicle to use a rear engine, rear drive layout. Later generations used the water cooled engine from the Subaru Rex, Vivio and the Pleo. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
