On 21 May 2009 the final Sable was produced, and in total over 2.1 million Mercury Sables were built, making it the third most produced Mercury model line, behind the Grand Marquis and Cougar. The 2009 Sable was the last year of the nameplate and of the fifth generation, built as a mid cycle update of the Montego, the counterpart of the Ford Taurus, as Mercury was wound down. It followed the Montego, which had replaced the Sable after 2005.
