The second generation Mazda3 had been unveiled in late 2008, the sedan at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 19 November and the hatchback weeks later at Bologna, and it went into 2009 with restyled bodies. The first generation 2009 model year in the United States and Canada lasted only a few months because production ceased in November 2008. Details of the high power Mazdaspeed3, known in Europe as the Mazda3 MPS, came out at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009.
