The R1 of 2008 was in its fourth year, a two door kei car whose derivative, the Subaru R1e, was an experimental battery electric vehicle in limited production for selected industrial clients in Japan, with lithium ion batteries that could be recharged to 80 percent in fifteen minutes. The R1 itself had the 658 cc EN engine in three versions with a CVT. The R1 is a two-door version of the Subaru R2, but with a shorter body and wheelbase.
