For the 2006 model year Mazda added variable valve timing and variable length intake runners to the 2.0 liter engine, raising power to 150 horsepower, and gave the 2.3 liter models a five speed automatic in place of the four speed. The larger engine became certified as a partial zero emissions vehicle for California and the states that follow its rules, and the colour palette was simplified. The Mazda3 was the second best selling car in Canada in 2006, and production began in Iran that year.
