The 2006 Impala was introduced at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show on the updated General Motors W platform, and it came as the LS, LT, LTZ and SS. The SS used the 5.3 liter Generation IV small block V8, the first and only V8 in a front wheel drive Chevrolet, rated at 303 horsepower, and the first V8 in a Chevrolet sedan since the 1996 Caprice. Six passenger seating was available as an option on the LS and LT models only, and the 5.3 liter V8 with Displacement on Demand, later called Active Fuel Management, produced 303 horsepower.
