For the 2005 model year Ford's Mercury brand introduced the rebadged version of the Escape as the Mariner, and the Escape hybrid became Ford's first hybrid electric vehicle and the first hybrid SUV on the American market by any manufacturer. The Maverick was reintroduced in 2005 in certain European markets with the Duratec V6 engine, after being temporarily discontinued in late 2003. The first generation Escape remains notable as the first SUV to offer a hybrid drivetrain.
