In 2004 the Escape Hybrid was released for the 2005 model year, for North American markets only, making the Escape the first SUV to offer a hybrid drivetrain. In the Philippines, by early 2004, Ford axed the XLT all wheel drive grade and replaced it with the newly introduced V6 trim. The European Maverick, sold from 2001 to 2004, had been temporarily dropped in late 2003. It was built on the same platform as the Mazda Tribute, in which Ford held a controlling interest in Mazda.
