The GMC Canyon was introduced in 2004 with the Chevrolet Colorado, to replace the S-15 and Sonoma compact pickups, with production beginning in October 2003. All North American market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations. The Canyon took its name from the deep chasm between cliffs, as the Colorado is named for the state, and the two trucks were designed together with Isuzu. The 2004 Canyon was the first model year of the GMC compact pickup, built in Louisiana.
