The 2.4 liter DOHC four cylinder engine that had been used in the Chrysler PT Cruiser replaced the AMC four for 2003. In 2002, for the 2003 model year, the three speed automatic transmission was replaced by a four speed automatic with overdrive, and the standard skid plate was revised to make room for the Rubicon's bigger transfer case. The skid plate was revised that year for the Rubicon's larger NV241OR transfer case, and the Rubicon was added to the range.
