For the 2004 model year the long wheelbase Unlimited model was introduced, a 10 inch longer wheelbase version of the Wrangler returning after an absence of 18 years. It was virtually identical to the wheelbase of the earlier CJ-8 Scrambler, and in 2004 only automatic transmission Unlimiteds were sold. It had almost double the towing capacity of the short wheelbase model. It was a hardtop and soft top two door car, with the longer Unlimited version built on a ten inch longer wheelbase.
