The Bongo of 2001 was in its third year of the fourth generation, the SK platform van and truck with a 1.8 liter EGI F8-E petrol engine of 90 PS and a diesel 2.2 liter R2 of 79 PS. Mazda's difficult business environment at the time meant it could not afford a full brand new platform, so the new Bongo used the previous generation's. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
