The Z06 made its debut in 2001, a successor to the ZR-1 that took its name from the high performance Z06 of the 1960s. It used a tuned LS6 engine of 385 horsepower. The Active Handling System, first an option in 1998, became standard on all 2001 models. Not until the C5 based Z06 of 2001 did Chevrolet have another production Corvette able to match the performance of the ZR1. The Z06 used the LS6 engine, which produced 385 horsepower in 2001 before being raised to 405.
