The 2000 model year was the last for the Rover L-series diesel in the Freelander, which was replaced the next year by a BMW-built engine, and BMW itself broke up the Rover Group that year and sold Land Rover to Ford. The Freelander of this time was marketed as a premium compact 4x4 and had earned a place as a patented design with its intermediate reduction drive. It remained without a low-range gearbox or locking differential.
