Following the 1999 model year the Tracer was withdrawn, along with the Escort station wagon, as Ford began phasing out the Escort in favor of the Focus for 2000. For 1999, 23,146 examples were sold, and the final Mercury Tracer rolled off the assembly line on 2 July 1999. Without a Mercury counterpart to the Focus, the brand exited the compact car segment. It was derived from the Ford CT120 platform. The Tracer was a front wheel drive compact and the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Escort.
