Following its launch at the London Motor Show in October 1997, the Astra Mk4 was released in the spring of 1998, addressing many of the criticisms of the Mk3 with greatly improved ride and handling. The growing emphasis on safety was reflected in greater body rigidity, resulting in a Euro NCAP four star crash test rating, considered excellent for its time. In the UK the Mk4 was available with a range of 16 valve Ecotec engines as well as some 8 valve units.
