The Sumo was discontinued in 1998 when the sixth generation Sambar was introduced, and the market it had been aimed at was refocused on the Subaru Forester, which had standard permanent four wheel drive, a more powerful 2.5 liter boxer engine and more cargo space. In Japan the segment of the Domingo is now served by the Subaru Exiga, which carries up to seven passengers. The Sumo shared many characteristics with the Sambar.
