In March 1998 Mitsubishi issued a recall for all 1990 to 1998 Eclipse GSXs because the transfer case could lock up from insufficient lubrication. Mitsubishi quietly updated its 4G63 engine in 1998 and 1999, and the Eclipse entered the 24 Hours of Daytona again in 1998, but in a lower specification class, GT3 or GTS3. The second generation was in its fourth year. The Eclipse was the product of the alliance of Mitsubishi Motors and Chrysler, which gave rise to Diamond-Star Motors.
