For 1998 the Mystique had a new design for the front and rear fascias, including a chrome grille surround and larger headlights, with Mercury emblems on the rear quarter windows. Its interior received new fabric choices, leather seating, previously optional, became standard on LS models, and faux wood trim made it more upscale than the Contour. Integrated rear child safety seats were optional on the Mystique, and second generation airbags became standard.
