The Debonair of 1997 was in its sixth year of the third generation, a longer and wider executive sedan. It was the flagship passenger vehicle of Mitsubishi Motors in the Japanese market, which was largely sold to senior level executives of the Mitsubishi Group and affiliated companies, until the Proudia came. The word debonair means gentle, courteous, suave, lighthearted or nonchalant. The second and third generations met with considerable success in South Korean license production.
