A few months after the newer BH model was introduced, production of the BG was extended until 1997, primarily for the taxi fleet market. The eighth generation Familia was facelifted in October 1996 and was on sale as the Protege, 323 and Familia until the ninth generation BJ arrived in 1998. FAW Group bought out Haima between 1997 and 1998, whose saloon was based on the Familia. The Familia was also sold as the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor, and as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America.
