On 17 March 1997 Ford announced the discontinuation of the Probe, and the last one was built on 20 June 1997. A GTS package was offered on the Probe GT that year, an appearance package with dual racing stripes, though performance was identical to the GT. Side door intrusion beams were redesigned for the 1997 federal side impact standards. A third generation, on the Contour's platform, was developed, but became the next Mercury Cougar.
