Sales of the Eterna ended in August 1996 because of the full model change of the Galant and the cleaning up of the model lineup. The eighth generation Galant was not sold at Car Plaza then, so the Legnum, the wagon of the eighth generation Galant, was also sold at Car Plaza as a stopgap successor. The real successor was the Aspire, the sister of the eighth generation Galant, sold from 1998. The name Eterna is Italian for eternal.
