For 1996 a new four speed automatic became available in any trim of the Cavalier, which had originally been intended to be introduced along with the redesign but was delayed by General Motors' cash shortage. The Z24 and LS convertible received a new engine in 1996, the 2.4 liter DOHC LD9, producing 150 horsepower and 155 pound feet of torque, which was used until 2002. The 4 speed automatic arrived a year late for the 1995 redesign.
