The Aspire went on sale in North America in 1994 as the replacement for the Festiva, offered as a three door and, for the first time, a five door hatchback. It was the first car in its class with dual airbags as standard and anti lock brakes as an option, and a sporty SE trim was offered. The Festiva was a small Mazda designed hatchback that Ford sold in several markets, some of them under other names. Kia in South Korea built most of the cars sold under the Festiva and Aspire names, and sold the same design as the Pride and the Avella.
